In 1984, 10 years after my family immigrated to Los Angeles, I decided to live and make work in Korea for a year documenting the country in transition before starting graduate school in photography. Looking back at the series now, I see that I was drawn to exploring its built environments and street life, and the expressive qualities of the bodies, for example the way we sit/squat to the ground or touch one another. I was looking at the country as both an insider and an outsider, and photographing it as a way to better understand my experiences.
